ASPHALT SHINGLES

Chapter 01

Why shingle roofs let go in Central Washington

Wind is the first thing to beat a shingle roof here. Ellensburg is called the Windy City, and a tab that lifts in November can crease, tear and fly off before the first snow. Most manufacturer wind warranties are limited to 15 years, which is shorter than the roof is meant to last.

Other warning signs are easier to spot from the ground. Look for missing or broken shingles, lots of granules in the gutters, sagging and water stains on a ceiling. Roofs also fail early when the install is poor, the attic does not ventilate, moisture builds up or the shingle is cheap. A thin three-tab shingle gives up sooner than a thick architectural one, which is built to resist heavy rain and winds of 110 to 130 mph.

How a Columbia Plateau crew puts shingles on

We install two manufacturers, CertainTeed and Malarkey, and the crew is trained on both. The company holds the CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier credential and is a Malarkey Emerald Premium contractor, backed by more than 25 years of asphalt shingle work.

Every shingle roof is fastened with Gust Guard, our own system. Sure Grip fasteners go in at 50% more than the industry standard, so the parts of the roof the wind attacks first are held down hardest.

The job runs in a set order. We inspect, measure, fly the drone and check the attic, walk you through the options, then send a written proposal. The crew tears off the old roof, replaces any bad decking and uses Catch-All protection and a self-propelled roofing trailer to keep debris off your siding, windows and yard. Most replacements take 1 to 3 days, with cleanup every day.

Chapter 03

How long a shingle roof lasts and what stands behind it

Asphalt shingles typically last 20 to 30 years in Washington. Moss, moisture and a poorly ventilated attic shorten that, and good installation, ventilation and upkeep stretch it. A look at the roof after a big windstorm catches most problems while they are still small repairs.

As a CertainTeed and Malarkey credentialed contractor we can offer extended manufacturer warranties, and Gust Guard adds its own lifetime warranty against blow-offs. Ask to see the exact terms in the written proposal before you sign.

Profund financing is available, and veteran and senior discounts apply.
